Living in Carmel is simply serene. The hustle and bustle of the “real world” seems almost non-existent. Everyone has responsibilities, no doubt, but in this part of the world it seems that our natural surroundings are distracting enough to make procrastination justifiable. Just take a walk along Carmel beach and experience how it feels to be truly in the moment; all that matters is that the sand is warm between your toes and the water is cold but feels like something you’ve needed for a while.
Carmel has changed since it first emerged as a bohemian artist’s haven. The “starving artist” typically cannot afford to live here anymore. Most of the locals have been around for a while, generally of retirement age. The privileged few who manage to raise families here work hard to stay in this unique paradise. The young people here are for the most part typical California: relaxed, sun-kissed, and inspired by nature, slightly rebellious, but easy-going and friendly. Many who grow up here long for more excitement, as there is not a lot going on in this small city. It’s pretty quiet here at night. We locals call it “sleepy-town”, because if you walk down the streets of Carmel after ten o’clock you probably won’t hear anything. The police are bored out of their minds, pulling over anyone they possibly can, usually regarding a “California stop” (rolling slowly through a stop sign) or a burned-out headlight. The police log in the local newspaper is hilarious, documenting every single incident that week, which usually amounts to a few DUIs and maybe a “suspicious person” eating hotel cookies.
For those people who do not want to move to a bigger city, the challenge is to find affordable housing and a good job. There are lots of service jobs, but not a whole lot of innovation and technology. It takes a certain amount of creativity to discover your niche here. If you happen to find a good spot, you will probably stay for a while. Something about the Cypress trees and enchanting sunsets give meaning to everyday existence. For many of us living paycheck to paycheck, uncertainty looms like the thick blankets of fog that hang over us on chilly days. But drive out to Carmel Valley for almost certain sunny skies. You’ll be sure to find something to distract you from the daily toils.
Carmel is full of upscale shopping. Tourists and locals alike flock to Paloosh and GBG and Coach and eat at some of the finest restaurants in California. Spend enough time on Ocean Avenue and you are bound to spot a celebrity or two. Art enthusiasts can spend hours peering into the windows of countless galleries. Grab a cup of coffee at the famous Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of central California living at its finest. Once you arrive here, you won't want to leave. At least for a while.
